Getting Back to Work with Bipolar Disorder

July 31st, 2007 by Dr. Fink

Recently, Jeff posted a comment on ”Quit Your High-Stress Job?” asking for advice and support related to his situation. Because work is such a common problem area for people with bipolar disorder, I encourage you to read that article and the interesting discussion that it has generated, including my response.

If your employers aren’t aware you have bipolar disorder, then it is a bad start. Due to the illness, people with bipolar disorder struggle to get through what others consider normal conditions. I know from experience. I’m one of the lucky ones; I have fantastic employers. I’m not bragging. They have known from the very beginning (in fact I was diagnosed while working for them) that I have bipolar disorder. They have done everything possible to help me. Although I still go through very stressful periods, they allow time off work when I’m depressed. Besides the time off work during depressive episodes, they have a very loyal employee who values being able to work and accepted.

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards
    Minnie
